CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ NASCAR accused Speedway Motorsports Inc. of trying to "enrich itself at the expense of the sport and its fans" by supporting assertions in a lawsuit against the sanctioning body.

A terse statement attributed to NASCAR was issued Friday to a legal response filed Wednesday by SMI in a lawsuit by Francis Ferko, an SMI stockholder from Plano, Texas. Ferko's lawsuit alleges NASCAR failed to deliver on a promise to put a second Winston Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway.
