Recently, variable frequency drive (VFD) manufacturers have participated in a discussion about moving the VFD specifications from the mechanical portion of the Construction Specification Institute (CSI) Master Spec (Division 15) to the electrical portion (Division 16). Some support for this change may stem from concerns about harmonics, but some VFD manufacturers may have a vested interest in having the drives specified in Division 16.
Mechanical department personnel at consulting firms often are not comfortable with harmonics issues; however, specifying VFDs in Division 16 can also raise concerns about sole-source responsibility and coordination.
