Many equipment suppliers today are promoting "open" systems, touting that their systems are designed around "standards" and claiming that those systems can be "seamlessly integrated" into existing infrastructure. Unfortunately, many facility managers have found that supposedly open systems don't provide the interoperability they expect. A greater understanding of the goals, driving forces, and advantages of open-architecture networks would help facility managers find a system that provides the greatest benefits to them.
