Mission critical facilities support functions essential to human life and health and economic activities worth trillions of dollars. Designing, operating, and maintaining these systems can be essential to their proper operation. Key engineering decisions, however, are often based on personal experience or anecdotal evidence from other projects. Designers and system operators who wish to achieve the highest reliability and safety in the most cost-effective manner need a quantitative method to evaluate the impact of design choices and maintenance practices. Probabilistic risk appraisal (PRA) is one such method.
