Elaine Rogers bursts into her Fort Myer, Va., office, located on the edge of Arlington National Cemetery, high heels clicking across the floor as she and her assistant rapidly exchange information.

As the president of the Metropolitan Washington chapter of the USO (United Service Organizations), she has already clocked many hours of meetings in the Capital City today-one at the Pentagon, one with a congressman, another to check on an upcoming fund-raising event, and still another with volunteers at a local outreach center.

And it's only 3 p.m.

Quickly, Elaine rifles through a thick stack of phone messages on her desk as her assistant chases her with more. The Air Force's chief of staff called to say he will attend next week's event, as will the lieutenant governor of Maryland. Elaine smiles in triumph.

Stars James Brolin and Connie Stevens will help with the upcoming fund-raiser. She grins again. Microsoft and AT&T will once more give …
