Canadian fertilizer producer Agrium has begun a lawsuit against US oil and gas company Unocal over liabilities arising from Agrium's purchase of Unocal's fertilizer assets. According to Agrium, the company faces up to $40m in environmental liabilities arising from the purchase, of which it has so far paid $6.8m, $4m of which Unocal has accepted liability for, but for which no payment has as yet been received. One such issue is the effluent sewer from the Kenai, Alaska site. Agrium claims it was told by Unocal that the sewer could be repaired for $3m, but that the day before the purchase Unocal agreed with the US ...
