NORFOLK, Va. _ The Army Corps of Engineers will redirect at least $1 million to grow hundreds of thousands of baby oysters and plant them on artificial reefs in the Chesapeake Bay.
The effort, which is to begin next spring, aims to overcome diseases that continue to kill large numbers of native oysters in Virginia waters.
Corps officials in Norfolk described the move as a major shift in strategy in the decade-old drive to restore native stocks in the Bay.
"It's a whole new ball game," said Doug Martin, oyster program manager for the corps.
