Two great musicals, only 12 years apart in age but light-years apart stylistically, are this week's DVD picks.
We begin with what is arguably the greatest rock `n' roll movie ever made, "A Hard Day's Night" (Miramax, 1964; rated G; 1 hour, 28 minutes plus supplemental material; original 1.66:1 widescreen format enhanced for 16:9 televisions; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound; $29.99).
Although the film has been on DVD for some time, it has never looked or sounded this good. The music, in particular, sounds super. In fact, the sound is so good you can actually hear the individual bass notes from Paul's guitar.
