CHAPEL HILL, N.C. _ Beware the Toe, Dan Orner.
Orner is the North Carolina kicker who tied an NCAA record by hitting three field goals longer than 50 yards Sept. 7 against Syracuse. His season has been so successful that coach John Bunting awarded him a scholarship this weekend.
Orner better be careful or he might become a candidate for the Lou Groza Award, named for former NFL kicker Lou "the Toe" Groza and given to the country's best college kicker.
See, the Groza Award has a dirty little secret. It's jinxed.
Judd Davis knows. You probably don't know Judd Davis, and that's pretty much the point of this story. Davis won the Groza Award as a Florida junior in 1993. He didn't win it again as a senior, through no fault of his own. Not only did he make his first 11 field goals that season, but as a past winner he was able to cast a Groza vote _ so he voted for himself.
"They changed the rules after that," Davis says.
After college, Davis had a handful of NFL tryouts. He finished second for the Miami Dolphins kicking job behind Olindo Mare _ who went to the Pro Bowl.
