WICHITA, Kan. _ The other moms called Diane Johnson "the Martha Stewart of the preschool."
It began with the Christmas treats she delivered to her son Gunnar's class _ small felt stockings, each one decorated with hand-stitched embroidery and personalized with each child's name. They were filled with snowman stickers, pencils, erasers and a snowman pin.
"I would have assumed she'd bought them," said Deborah Smith, another mom. "Except I thought the odds of her finding pre-made stockings with names like Hadley and Maija on them were slim to none."
When Smith inquired about the stockings _ "Surely you didn't embroider all these yourself!" _ Johnson shrugged.
"Oh, we had a 30-hour car trip over Thanksgiving," she said.
A road trip to Albuquerque with two young kids, and she had time to embroider? But it didn't stop there.
For Groundhog Day, Johnson made each child a bag of goodies featuring groundhog pencils, stickers and a badge that said, "Think Spring!"
