SANTA ANA, Calif. _ Richard Carrizosa was rejected from the military because he didn't know how to read. He avoided promotions for fear he couldn't handle the paperwork and dreaded family events because he couldn't read his own birthday cards.
One Saturday last month, the 64-year-old grandfather and California native did something he couldn't do only a few years ago.
He picked up a speech he wrote himself and read it out loud.
"Today I'm helping someone else learn how to read," said Carrizosa, hardly faltering as he spoke to group of nearly 200 people in Tustin. "It has changed my life."
