Since its inception in 1979, The Ohio Light Opera has presented dozens of operettas, both familiar and rare, in fully-staged English-language productions. The company's continued success indicates an American audience for operetta, yet it remains one of the few professional groups dedicated to the preservation of this evanescent art form. Fortunately, OLO has been recording some of the rarest of its rediscoveries at the rate of about one per year. The latest is Emmerich Kalman's Der Zigeunerprimas (The Gypsy Virtuoso), which was given its first complete American production by the company in 2001. (It was originally staged at New York's Liberty Theater in 1914 in a truncated two-act version under the title of Sari.)
The efforts of OLO's artistic director emeritus, James Stuart, who reconstructed the original libretto and score, were well worth his while, as this is a genuinely appealing work brightened by some of Kalman's loveliest tunes.
