NEWPORT NEWS, Va. _ A 44-year-old former warehouse worker at Chick Packaging Inc.'s Newport News plant has filed a $1 million federal racial discrimination suit against the company, alleging an unknown coworker hung a rope noose in his work area and left it there for two months.
Gilbert Diggs, a Newport News resident who worked as a forklift operator, warehouse worker and maintenance worker at the warehouse, said in his lawsuit that he showed up for work one day late last year and found the noose near his work area.
Diggs, who is black, said in the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Norfolk that the noose was about a foot in diameter, and made of three-quarter-inch, light brown shipping rope. It had a slipknot at the neck to tighten and loosen it, he said.
