Women troubled by hirsutism who find mechanical removal methods and local treatments ineffective have several systemic--though off-label--medical options, Dr. Anne Lucky said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Hirsutism that is associated with hyperandrogenism often can be lessened by drugs that are competitive inhibitors of the androgen receptor. "Probably the best agent we have in this country for androgen-related hirsutism is spironolactone," she said.
"You need a fairly high dose for hirsutism, 100-200 mg/day," said Dr. Lucky, professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati.
