If you want to play a role in curbing antibiotic resistance, then "just say no" to unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr. George Kent advised at the annual meeting of the California Academy of Family Physicians.

He offered these practical tips for judicious use of antibiotics:

* Most cases of acute bronchitis are self-limiting. Limit antibiotics to patients with prolonged symptoms (10 days or more), COPD, or worsening symptoms that are suggestive of pneumonia, said Dr. Kent of Stanford (Calif.) University.
