Slim-fit tampons are so narrow that they can mistakenly be inserted into the urethra by young women who have never used tampons before, according to Dr. Joann Richichi and Dr. Marianne DiGiovanni of Turnersville, NJ.
They report the case of a 14-year-old girl who did not know she had a partially imperforate hymen, a condition which apparently led her to insert the tampon into the urethra. She presented for help after the tampon engorged and couldn't be removed.
The patient's initial complaint was vaginal pain and difficulty voiding; her unsuccessful attempts to remove the misplaced tampon then led to painful urination and hematuria.
Dr. Richichi and Dr. DiGiovanni intended to perform a hymenectomy and remove the tampon, but ...
