CHICAGO -- Breast changes caused by use of hormone replacement therapy rarely complicate the interpretation of mammograms.
The largest prospective study to date of the effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on a woman's mammogram readings has found--contrary to some previous reports--no significant difference in recall rates among the 3,222 consecutive patients who received screening mammograms.
"Lots of previous studies have shown that [HRT-related] increases in breast density were leading to patients having to be called back for additional imaging. There was also a concern that radiologists might be missing some cancers because the changes were just being attributed to hormone replacement therapy," explained Dr. Linda Moy who is with the department of radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.
