LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. -- Synthetic mesh may provide more support and lead to better surgical outcomes than cadaveric fascia lata in abdominal sacrocolpopexy, a small retrospective cohort study suggests.
After a mean follow-up of 21 months, 45% of the 31 women who received fascia lata reported recurrent vaginal bulging. Of the 38 women who had synthetic mesh, 14% reported bulging at a mean 26-month follow-up. This difference was statistically significant, Dr. Lesley Otto reported at the annual meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons.
The results were based on patient questionnaires and pelvic organ prolapse examinations.
