TORONTO -- New findings provide further evidence that high doses of vitamins C and E may help prevent preeclampsia in women at high risk for the disorder, but it's still too early to recommend this antioxidant regimen to patients, Lucilla Poston, Ph.D., said at the annual meeting of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation.
"If a high-risk woman wants to take antioxidants, she must realize that the studies have not been done to determine it has absolutely no effect on the neonate. However, if she wants to take that risk, it's up to her, and we have a lot of women who have taken that risk," said Dr. Poston, professor of fetal health at Guy's, King's and St. Thomas' School of Medicine, London.
Dr. Poston's group has previously shown that high doses of vitamins C and E significantly reduce the incidence of preeclampsia in high-risk women, compared with placebo (Lancet 354[9181]: 810-16, 1999).
