CHICAGO -- The antiretroviral agent nevirapine doesn't provide any further reduction in the risk of perinatal HIV transmission beyond the protective effects of standard antiretroviral therapy, Dr. Alejandro Dorenbaum said at a conference on retroviruses and opportunistic infections.
In a randomized study of 1,174 HIV-infected pregnant women, there were nine cases of perinatal HIV transmission among 594 (1.5%) women who added nevirapine to standard antiretroviral therapy. Similarly, there were eight cases of transmission among 580 (1.4%) women who added a placebo to standard antiretroviral therapy. The addition of nevirapine didn't appear to make a difference in the rate of transmission even among women with particularly high viral loads and/or low CD4 cell counts, noted Dr. Dorenbaum of Chiron Corp., ...
