SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, NEV. -- The large number of new products in development for hormone replacement therapy portends a dramatic shift in the way hormone replacement is prescribed.
No woman will stay with a single regimen indefinitely Dr. Maida Taylor predicted at an obstetrics and gynecology conference sponsored by the University of California, Davis.
"We will switch a woman from one regimen to another, from one class of drugs to another, depending on her individual needs and her specific risk profile at that point in time," predicted Dr. Taylor of the University of California, San Francisco.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is an extremely active area of drug development, said Dr. Taylor, who is a consultant to several pharmaceutical companies.
Of the 350 drugs currently being researched and developed by drug companies specifically for women, approximately 70 are some form of HRT.
A new HRT product is approved for marketing in the United States every 6-12 weeks.
