EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. _ To most of the outside world, Notre Dame's 22-0 victory over No. 21 Maryland on Saturday night was a convincing demonstration of how far the team has come from last year's 5-6 record.
But to the Irish, the game was simply a reminder of how much further they have to go to become a top-tier team.
Coach Tyrone Willingham said he views the Kickoff Classic victory not as a completed product but as a learning experience.
"I come in with the thought process that I'll have to adjust," Willingham said. "What we have to do now is see what we've done in this ballgame, and then go back and adjust from there, figure out what we need to do better and what adjustments we need to make to make us a better team."
His players said there is plenty of work to be done.
Carlyle Holiday's 226 yards passing was a career high, and his decision-making skills were more than sufficient, Willingham said.
"I thought Carlyle played a very good ballgame, especially for an opener. It was a great start," Willingham said.
