BLACKSBURG, Va. _ At the conclusion of Virginia Tech's practice Thursday, suspended cornerback Ronyell Whitaker summoned his defensive teammates to a huddle. Then, in tones both hushed and resounding, measured and profane, Whitaker berated the group for several minutes.
His message, censored and paraphrased for family readership:
You think you're good? You think holding Arkansas State to seven points last week was a big deal? Well, I got news for you. You're not squat. The defense made mental mistakes on half of Arkansas State's plays, and if that happens again Sunday, LSU will embarrass us.
Message received. Even with Whitaker serving the last day of his two-game suspension for violating team rules, Virginia Tech's defense dominated the defending Southeastern Conference champions.
The final at Lane Stadium was 26-8, among the most impressive conquests in Frank Beamer's 15-plus seasons as head coach.
"People took what Ronyell said to heart," cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. "People were acting happy just because they were starting. And if you're going to be like that, someone will take your job."
No question, few, if any, starting jobs are safe in coordinator Bud Foster's defense. The Hokies are that deep, that fast.
