SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Numbers! Numbers can lie, numbers can confuse, numbers can be a terrifying tease.
Numbers can ruin a poor columnist's day, especially if his calculator is on the blink and forecasting the A's potential winning percentage or Cal's projected BCS ranking feels like flunking high school trigonometry all over again.
But the numbers that piled up this weekend _ a shining, awe-inspiring, historical Book of Numbers _ were too much even for me to ignore.
So I reverted to SAT-mode and hunkered down to present a numerological countdown, in reverse order of significance:
