DARLINGTON, S.C. _ Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
Somebody cue up the shark music from "Jaws," here comes Jeff Gordon.
Gordon won his second straight Winston Cup race Sunday, pulling away from Ryan Newman and the rest of the field to lead 125 of the final 128 laps and win a rain-delayed Southern 500.
The victory was Gordon's fifth in NASCAR's oldest superspeedway race, tying Cale Yarborough's record.
Gordon won the Southern 500 four straight times, beginning in 1995. That's the kind of streak the four-time Winston Cup champion has come to be known for. But before his victory at Bristol, Tenn., one weekend earlier, it was a 31-race winless streak that everyone talked about.
That's old news. The buzz now is that Gordon is making a charge toward a possible points title. His latest victory, the 60th of his career, moved him from third to second in the standings.
Although he picked up only 20 points on leader Sterling Marlin, who wound up fourth, Gordon goes to Saturday night's race at Richmond, Va., riding a wave of momentum. Coming away from Richmond race four months ago, Gordon was 216 points behind.
