CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ For the second straight year, the Carolina Panthers will change starting quarterbacks just days before the start of the regular season.
Although Chris Weinke started all four exhibition games, he won't open the regular season, according to league and team sources.
The Carolina coaching staff has decided to start veteran Rodney Peete on Sunday when the Panthers open the regular season at home against the Baltimore Ravens, the sources said.
A final decision on whether Weinke would be the No.2 or No.3 quarterback hadn't been made and the staff will discuss the situation more Monday.
"We're discussing any number of personnel issues at this time and the quarterback position is one of them," Panthers coach John Fox said through a team spokesperson Sunday night.
The move could have lasting implications for a franchise that appeared to consider Weinke its future at the position.
After studying tapes of Weinke's rookie season last year and his career at Florida State, Fox and his staff elected to stick with the former Heisman Trophy winner instead of pursuing Joey Harrington or another quarterback early in the draft.
