CHICAGO_Between the seventh and eighth innings of Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan asked starting pitcher Chuck Finley if he had enough left for one more frame.
Finley, 39, nine starts into his role as the Redbirds' staff savior and lefthander-in-chief, gave La Russa the answer he hoped to hear but dreaded carrying out.
After 122 pitches, Finley said he could protect a 4-3 lead for one more inning.
After 131 pitches, Finley was pulled and the Cardinals were destined for a 5-4 loss that disappointed the red-clad faction in the crowd of 37,739. With righthanded reliever Rick White idling in the bullpen, Finley surrendered a game-tying home run to Cubs right fielder Angel Echevarria to start the eighth then walked lefthanded-hitting first baseman Fred McGriff to put the go-ahead run on base.
