KANSAS CITY _ A few more weeks are needed to identify the nation's surprise teams, the Maryland and Illinois of 2002. But two teams are definitely out of the running.

So much for building on the momentum of unexpected conference championships. The Terps and Illini proved in opening-game losses that there's a difference between having a great season and a great program.
Maryland fell to Notre Dame 22-0, while Illinois got thumped by Missouri 33-20 in two of the more eye-opening decisions of college football's first full weekend.
