MIAMI _ Talk from Indianapolis has been quiet, but there are whispers running back Edgerrin James is not ready for full contact and won't be able to handle a heavy workload in the early part of the season.

That's good news for the Dolphins, who play at Indianapolis in Week 2.

``I hear he's having some problems,'' former Chicago and New Orleans coach Mike Ditka said Thursday at the Bears-Dolphins exhibition game.

James, who tore his left anterior cruciate ligament last season, didn't play in four preseason games.

The Colts have tried to downplay that, saying James didn't need the contact of the exhibition season. But that doesn't mean he is at fault. Colts coaches and management repeatedly have said he reported in great shape, but coming back from that type of injury often takes at least half a season to work through the kinks.
