Probably more books have been written about Toscanini than about any other conductor. None has previously dealt specifically with the NBC years, however, and Mortimer H. Frank's new volume offers intriguing new insight into Toscanini's art. Frank, a respected record critic, was curator of the Toscanini archive at Wave Hill in Riverdale, N.Y. Having heard not only all of the conductor's commercial and "unofficial" (i.e. pirate) recordings but all of the NBC broadcasts as-well, Frank is in a unique position among Toscanini commentators. His thesis--that the live broadcasts reveal a more flexible, spontaneous artist than do the commercial recordings--refutes much of the critical wisdom about Toscanini's Indian summer at NBC. Even limited comparisons of the Italian maestro's performances (the earlier the better) will corroborate Frank's stand.
