For more than four decades, Thomas Allen's international career has embraced opera roles ranging from Mozart's Almaviva to Wagner's Beckmesser, from Tchaikovsky's Onegin to Britten's Billy Budd. They are all easy on the ear and sung with a warm, caressing tone and a seemingly artless naturalness. No fewer than four of them were written by Haydn Wood (1882-1959), but "The Roses of Picardy," Wood's most famous song, is not among them. Two of the selections owe their fame to John McCormack (Frederick O'Connor's "The Old House" and Edward Lockton's "I'll Walk Beside You"), but of course that immortal tenor favored many more of the ballads represented here.
