Countertenor David Daniels offers a new collection of arias from Handel's English oratorios, including selections from Belshazzar, Semele, Theodora, Saul and Jephtha, plus "He was despised" from Messiah. Daniels brings to bear his customary velvet tone, nuanced musicianship and impeccable taste, and he receives commensurately elegant accompaniment from conductor John Nelson and the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. Often, however, Daniels's refined sound production is undercut by less than complete involvement in Handel's frequently dramatic musical characterizations. All of Daniels's dynamic sensitivity, stylistic authority, control over his vibrato and dazzling coloratura somehow leave him just short of wringing the full emotional impact out of these pieces.
