We all know that urgency is a crucial aspect of creative expression--that artists feel the need to respond to the sweeping, dramatic events of their lifetime. But I confess that I was hoping, in the months after September 11, that our leading composers would not be racing each other to see who could get the first commission for a piece of music based on the tragedy. It's not that I didn't think it was the stuff of which a worthy opera or tone poem could be made. It's just that the basic idea smacked of opportunism.
