Despite the conception of being an untamed reliever, he averaged 31 saves per year from 1989 through 1993

"SON, I CAN HELP YOU straighten out your pitching mechanics, help you become a big leaguer someday. You see how you are striding toward the plate after the pitch? No, no, no.

"Try this: Heave your arm across your body as you throw the ball in the general direction of the plate, then let your back leg naturally kick up and swing around in front of you. Make sure you have your glove up so you don't land on your face as you fall off the side of the mound."

Imagine, an entire pitching staff throwing the way Mitch Williams used to for the Rangers, Cubs and Phillies. Remember Williams? Walking the bases loaded until you wanted to kill him and then striking out the side? He did that constantly during the Cubs' march to the 1989 National League East title and the Phillies' 1993 N.L. pennant.

Well, Williams is older and wiser now. Older, for sure. At 36, he is with the Atlantic City Surf of the independent Atlantic League as, believe it or not, the pitching coach.

COACH WILD THING

"A big-name guy like that coaching us? That's pretty cool," said Andy High, one of Williams' young pitchers. "He was the original `Wild Thing.' And he'll have a lot to talk to us about--other than mechanics.
