IT SEEMED LIKE AN APRIL FOOLS prank in the spring of 1991 when Fernando Valenzuela's release from the Dodgers was announced.
Just 10 days prior to that news, Valenzuela--the toast of Los Angeles and its Mexican community for 10 seasons--was basking in the standing ovation of fans in Monterrey, Mexico, where he turned in one of his finest performances of any spring during his 10 years in Dodger Blue.
