According to his catcher, Charles Johnson, 24-year-old starter has the `tunnel vision' possessed by great pitchers
IT WAS EARLY, ABOUT 8:45 A.M. ON A typical day last March during spring training, and Marlins manager John Boles had just sent for Ryan Dempster.
Minutes later, Dempster comes running through the door. His face is covered with jam. It's on his cheeks, his chin, covering his goatee. It's everywhere. He looks like a 2-year-old who has just fallen into a vat of the stuff.
"Hi skip," Dempster said without breaking a smile. "I was just having breakfast and they said you wanted to see me."
This was the man Boles gave the ball to when the Marlins opened their most important season in years. This, Marlins fans, is your staff ace, a man who wears jam on his face almost as well as he throws a slider.
Dempster is not only the best starter of one of the youngest staffs in baseball, but he carries the burden of playing on a team striving to regain championship form.
The Marlins also limped into the season with two starters in the wings. Chuck Smith, the No. 3 starter, was out with a sprained shoulder, and A.J. Burnett was out with a broken foot.
