There was a brief but intense discussion on ISWorld toward the end of June about information systems journal rankings. This was initiated by an observation that the ISWorld journal rankings page excluded many of the European and non-North American information systems journals, some of which would have ranked among the top 10. Subsequently, the discussion turned into a debate about how journal rankings are generated, and should be generated, using different objective and subjective ranking schemes.
This experience led me to reflect on the status of Information Systems Research as perceived by the information systems academic community. ISR has had the benefit of being considered a top information systems journal from its inception. Though such recognition at such an early stage of the journal's life cycle is somewhat unusual, the fact that ISR is sponsored by a leading academic and professional society (initially TIMS and later INFORMS), was founded by a distinguished group of academics (see Editorial Notes in ISR March 1990), and has a high-quality editorial board all...
