Listen up, ladies. It appears that as little as one tablespoon of ground flaxseed a day could help protect against breast cancer. Dr. Joanne Slavin of the University of Minnesota in St. Paul and colleagues conducted a study involving 34 post-menopausal nuns. In addition to their regular diet (which was similar for all of the participants), the nuns consumed one of three levels of supplementation: 0, 5 and 10 grams per day of ground flax for seven weeks.

The findings? Among the women taking the supplements, levels of estrogens fell significantly. The estrogen levels of those not taking any flaxseed remained stable.
