Energy consultants believe that a window of opportunity now exists in California for small, reciprocating engine generators to serve electric load, despite reservations about environmental restrictions. High electric prices for retail customers, combined with incentive programs for distributed generation and relaxed environmental rules, have created opportunities for a traditional technology even as most consumers have become comfortable considering new technologies-like microturbines and fuel cells-for onsite power needs.
