NASHVILLE, TENN. -- Long-term aspirin use may lower a woman's risk of ovarian cancer by 40%, Dr. Arslan Akhmedkhanov reported during the annual meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.
But this finding must be confirmed in larger, prospective studies before the drug should be used in this capacity, cautioned Dr. Akhmedkhanov of New York University, New York.
"We must be very cautious in interpreting these results," he said. "There are risks associated with aspirin use that must also be assessed."
The prospective study, which involved participants in New York University's Women's Health Study, included more than 14,000 women who had been followed for an average of 12 years.
The women were asked in a survey during the follow-up period whether they had taken aspirin at least three times per week for a period of at least 6 months.
For women who answered positively, additional information about dose and duration was gathered.
