RENO, NEV. -- Women who chose elective repeat cesarean section and those who failed vaginal birth after cesarean were at similar risk for major operative bladder and bowel injuries in a large retrospective cohort study.
These findings are in sharp contrast to those of several previous investigations, where maternal injury or complications were significantly more common among those electing a trial of labor, Dr. Sally Y. Segel said in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
The current study, which included 14,309 women with a prior cesarean section delivery, showed that both groups had "approximately the same risk of operative injury," reported Dr. Segel of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
