BEHOLD! The Top Ten, Rider magazine's annual awards feature that recognizes the top motorcycles in 10 classes, as well as the Aftermarket Product of the Year. Today's motorcycles are all worlds better than most of us are riders, but in our minds some still stand a rung or two above the rest every year, and we think they should get some special recognition.
Rider's editors chose the Top Ten winners from the U.S. lineup of bikes designated 2001 models. For example, the 2001 BMW F650GS just became eligible this year, even though it has been available since the summer of 2000, but year-2002 bikes such as the Honda VTX we test in this issue won't be considered until next year. Eligibility for the Bike of the Year award was and always is limited to models that are all-new or significantly changed for the model year in question. To be included in the judging, all motorcycles had to be available to us by March 15, 2001. The winners were also considered as is, without the benefit of aftermarket accessories, though factory options such as hard saddlebags were included and weighed against their additional cost.
Beyond those few our judging criteria are all over the map, from cost to comfort on the long haul, from styling to engine performance to simply the motorcycles that really blow our skirts up. Astute Top Ten...
