One in 71 Americans will develop melanoma at some time in their lives, according to new data from the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Darrell S. Rigel said at a seminar on clinical dermatology sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.
That's up from a lifetime risk of 1 in 100 in 1993, 1 in 250 in 1985, and 1 in 1,500 in 1935. At the current rate of increase, the lifetime risk of melanoma is expected to rise to 1 in 50 in 2010, said Dr. Rigel of New York University Medical Center, New York.
Dr. Rigel said the American Cancer Society released these most current calculations to him for use in his research.
