When a patient complains that she has started developing irritation to her cosmetics, the easiest "fix" is to replace the old cosmetics with new ones, Dr. Zoe Draelos said.
Most cosmetics have a shelf life of no longer than 6 months once opened, after which they spoil. When the emulsifier fails so that water-soluble and oil-soluble ingredients separate, the cosmetic won't perform well. More importantly, it means the preservative system has failed because usually preservatives are located in water-soluble or oil-soluble phases of the product, but not both.
