A 45-minute aerobic exercise regimen performed 3 days a week can halve the number of tension headaches and migraines that patients experience after 2-3 months, Dr. Fred D. Sheftell said at the annual meeting of the American Headache Society.
Some headache patients, particularly migraineurs, may have a difficult time starting exercise because the activity can initiate or exacerbate a headache. Patients should start slowly and increase the exercise intensity and duration over time, said Dr. Sheftell of the New England Center for Headache, Stamford, Conn.
