ANAHEIM, CALIF. -- The best way to help your patients reduce their risk of bone fracture is to first focus on fall prevention efforts, Dr. Gail Greendale said at a meeting on controversies in women's health sponsored by the University of California, Los Angeles.
"It's better to put all of your energy into the fall prevention part of the equation be cause preventing falls is much more powerful than what you can do with improving bone density," said Dr. Greendale, research director of the Iris Cantor-UCLA Women's Health Center in Los Angeles.
Universal measures she recommended included the following:
* Identify and treat sensory defects, neurologic disease, and arthritis. "That sounds trivial, but if I had a nickel for every person who comes to my clinic for a bone mineral density test with undiagnosed severe knee arthritis, I would be a wealthy person," she said.
