The antidepressant venlafaxine (Effexor) significantly reduced hot flashes in a randomized, controlled trial of 191 menopausal women, reported Dr. Charles L. Loprinzi of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., and his associates.
These findings suggest that breast cancer survivors or menopausal women at high risk for breast cancer who are concerned about taking hormones can consider taking venlafaxine instead, the investigators said (Lancet 356[9247]:2059-63, 2000).
After 4 weeks of treatment, patients on venlafaxine reported a greater reduction in hot flash activity than those on placebo. At least a 50% reduction in hot flashes was reported by 45% of 49 patients on 37.5 mg/ day, 65% of 43 patients on 75 mg/day, ...
