SAN ANTONIO -- The relatively poor breast cancer survival of African American women may be due in part to a more aggressive tumor biology, Dr. William M. Butler said at a breast cancer symposium sponsored by the San Antonio Cancer Institute.

In his retrospective review of all 384 newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer during 1998 at the South Carolina Comprehensive Breast Center, Charleston, estrogen receptor-negative tumors were more than twice as common among black patients as in white patients.
