RENO, NEV. -- Vaginally administered misoprostol was more effective than the oral drug for cervical ripening and labor induction in a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial.
A group of 126 women undergoing labor induction was given 50 [micro]g of misoprostol orally every 3 hours or vaginally every 6 hours. Delivery of their babies occurred within 12 hours in 36% of women in the intravaginal misoprostol group and in 13% of those in the oral group, Dr. Stephanie Fisher reported at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Within 24 hours, delivery was complete in 73% of the vaginal drug group and in 52% of the oral drug group. These differences were statistically significant, said Dr. Fisher of Queen's University, Kingston, Ont.
A favorable cervix was obtained in 17 hours with the oral drug and 12.4 hours with the vaginal preparation. And when misoprostol was delivered vaginally, the time from induction to delivery was 19.2 hours, ...
