RENO, NEV. -- Fetal fibronectin was a useful predictor of preterm delivery in women who had undergone multifetal pregnancy reduction, Dr. Andrei Rebarber said in a poster session at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
An inflammatory response is unleashed following multifetal pregnancy reduction to resorb the reduced products of conception. Concern had existed that this response might disrupt the integrity of the maternal-fetal interface and lead to unacceptable rates of false-positive fibronectin assays, said Dr. Rebarber of New York University in New York.
In the first study to evaluate the accuracy of the assay in this clinical situation, a group of 36 patients were followed prospectively with serial screens for vaginal fetal fibronectin at 22, 25, 28, ...
